Offer & Order payments: checkout and reconciliation

In short: With dynamic offers and orders, payment stops being the end of checkout and links distribution, accounting and experience. What changes and how to prepare.

Written for: Airline payments, ecommerce, finance and retailing leaders.

Cover: Offer & Order payments: checkout and reconciliation

In an order model, every euro collected must know which product it belongs to; if it does not, reconciliation becomes the bottleneck of retailing.

Payment is no longer the end of the funnel

In the ticket-based model, payment was settled at issuance: one amount, one form of payment, one document. With Offer & Order, a single purchase can include own and third-party services, partial payments, ancillaries added days later and changes that create charges or refunds on specific items.

It is no coincidence that the World Aviation Festival 2026 schedules sessions on payments in a retail-driven airline world, on reconciliation in the age of Offer & Order and on what changes in payments when retail changes. Payment has become a product capability.

    Three fronts changing at once

    Checkout: collecting offers, not fares

Checkout must accept combinations that did not exist before: paying for the flight now and baggage later, splitting the amount between travellers or applying points only to certain items. Every combination that is not supported is an offer that cannot be sold. The technical foundation is solid payment orchestration.

Settlement: multiple beneficiaries in one order

When the order includes a hotel, transfer or insurance, the money collected must be split between the airline and its partners. Without defined settlement logic, every third-party product adds manual work and accounting risk.

    Reconciliation: where programmes fail

Reconciliation compares what was collected with what was sold and delivered. In an order world, the reference object is no longer the ticket, and many finance teams do not yet have an equivalent. It is the most common reason the roadmap to Offers & Orders slips.

What the ecommerce team should demand

    • An order reference on every transaction: to trace any charge or refund back to its item.

    • Support for partial and deferred payments: with clear expiry and cancellation rules.

    • Item-level refunds: returning only what is cancelled, to the original payment method where appropriate.

    • Visibility of cost per transaction: essential to measure the true profitability of the direct channel.

    • Payment data in the customer model: preferred methods, recent failures and refund behaviour.

    Common mistakes

    • Designing the offer catalogue without involving treasury and accounting.

    • Handling third-party products with separate charges that fragment the experience.

    • Measuring only approval rate instead of the total cost of collecting, refunding and reconciling.

    • Postponing reconciliation until the end of the ONE Order implementation programme.

    How to start

A realistic first step is to map the money flows of the five offer combinations that sell most in the direct channel: who collects, when, with which reference and how it is reconciled. That exercise reveals within weeks the dependencies that will block modern retailing and lets the team prioritise with data.

    Conclusion

Offer & Order turns payments into commercial infrastructure. Airlines that design checkout, settlement and reconciliation as a single flow will be able to sell richer offers without multiplying manual work; those that leave it to the end will discover the bottleneck was never the offer engine.

Consumer Services Hub helps airlines align payments, retailing and finance so the direct channel can sell modern offers without operational friction.
