AI agents on WhatsApp: chat as a sales channel

In short: Airlines now sell, change bookings and add extras on WhatsApp with AI agents. How to run messaging as a real ecommerce channel, not a support tool.

Written for: Ecommerce, digital channel, customer care and product leaders in airlines and hotels.

Cover: AI agents on WhatsApp: chat as a sales channel

A chat that only answers questions is a cost; a chat that books, collects payment and sells extras is another direct channel and must be managed as one.

    From service to sales

The first wave of airline assistants focused on deflecting contacts. The second, already in production, lets customers book flights, change bookings and add services from channels such as WhatsApp. At the World Aviation Festival 2026, Air Europa presents how its AI agents book, change and sell extras on WhatsApp; Alaska Airlines discusses agents as "the new front door", and other sessions focus on proactive agents that drive both service and revenue.

The shift matters: we have already covered what it takes for AI agents to resolve customer service cases. When they also sell, offer, price, payment and conversion come into play.

Why messaging can work as a direct channel

It is where the customer already is

In many markets, messaging is the normal way to deal with companies. Booking there removes steps: no app to download, no password to remember, a key difference when deciding the role of app versus web.

    It keeps context

A conversation builds history: a customer who asked about a destination yesterday can book it today without starting over. That is an advantage over the website if the agent can access that context.

    It makes post-booking sales easier

Seat, baggage or flight changes are decisions customers make after booking. Offering them in the same thread fits the logic of increasing airline ancillary revenue.

What must be solved for it to sell

    1. The same offer as the website. Prices, rules and availability must come from the same engine; a channel with different prices breeds distrust.

    2. Secure payments in the flow. Payment links, wallets or tokenised methods, without dropping into manual processes.

    3. Customer identity. Link the phone number to the profile and its bookings, with verification proportional to risk.

    4. Actions with limits. What the agent can change or refund and what requires approval, just as in airline post-booking management.

    5. Handover to a person without losing the sale. If the customer needs help, the basket and context must stay alive.

How to measure it as a channel

    • Conversion per conversation started and per detected purchase intent.

    • Revenue per conversation, including ancillaries.

    • Cost per booking versus website, app and call centre.

    • Resolution rate without human intervention for changes and services.

    • Satisfaction and repeat use versus other touchpoints.

    Risks to watch

    • Launching the channel without connecting it to the booking engine, producing answers that cannot be executed.

    • Measuring messages handled instead of sales and resolutions.

    • Treating it as a customer care project without ecommerce involvement.

    • Ignoring that external agents will also be able to book, as explained in how AI agents may reshape distribution.

    Conclusion

Conversational channels with AI agents can become a profitable extension of the direct channel, but only if they share offer, payments and measurement with the website and app. The key decision is not which AI model to use, but who owns the channel and with which commercial goals.
